Apple pear crisp is baked in the oven. Its base layer consists of pears and apples flavored with sugar and spices and do not consist of a bottom crust. Compared to apple cobbler or pear crumble, apple pear crisp has a crust that is coarser in texture and appears more rustic. A typical fruit crisp uses oatmeal to make the crust, combined with flour, butter, nuts, and cinnamon. In this recipe, granola is used instead of oats for a coarser texture and enhanced crunch.

Ingredients

For the Topping:
½ cup chopped walnuts
1 cup flour
½ cup brown sugar
5 tablespoons granulated sugar
1/8 teaspoon cinnamon
4 oz. butter
¾ cup granola

For the Filling:
3 Granny Smith apples (peeled and cored
2 pears (peeled and cored)
¼ cup granulated sugar
1 tablespoon all purpose flour
1/8 teaspoon cinnamon
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

Preparation Instructions

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Prepare the topping by cutting the butter into the flour, then adding the sugar, walnuts, granola, and cinnamon and mixing well. Set aside.
Prepare the filling by cutting the apples and pears into pieces about ½ in. thick. Pour into a bowl and add the vanilla, cinnamon, and flour. Toss. Sprinkle with sugar.
Pour the filling into an 8 x 8 in. baking pan. Cover with the nut topping. Bake for 20 to 30 minutes or until the topping is golden and the filling bubbles. Serve cool.
