Salisbury Steak
Salisbury steak was a favorite childhood meal of mine. My grandmother would take us out to eat at a cafeteria style restaurant and I would always pick Salisbury steak, mashed potatoes and macaroni and cheese. Not a very healthy choice but it was what I liked. A simple recipe to make with ground beef is Salisbury steak. It's almost the same as making meatloaf but with a few variations.
I had bought some beef patties for my daughter and she said she didn't like how they taste. To keep from wasting them I made them into Salisbury steak instead. It has been a while since I have eaten red meat and they were pretty good. If you like Salisbury steak, you will like this recipe which is quick and simple like fillet of char.
Ingredients:
1 pound ground beef
2 onions
½ cup oats
1 egg
1 small green pepper
¼ cup Worcestershire sauce
1 can beef broth or water
1 tbsp cornstarch
Garlic powder
Salt and pepper
Procedure:
Get a big mixing bowl and add ground beef to it. Cut up the green pepper and onion into small pieces and add to ground beef.
Add the Worcestershire sauce, egg, and salt and pepper. Add the oats in and mix well with clean hands. Sprinkle some garlic powder into beef mixture and form into round patties. Place the patties into square casserole dish. Use the other small onion and quarter and spread over the beef patties. If you use beef broth, take it easy on the salt since canned broths has a lot of sodium in it or just use water if you have no broth.
Pour the broth or water over patties covering them. In a small bowl put in 1 tbsp cornstarch and add just a little cold water to it and mix it up then add to the liquid in the casserole dish. Place the beef steaks into a 350 degree oven and bake for 45 minutes. If gravy is too thick add water or if it is too thin add a tsp of cornstarch.
Take out of the over and you have fast and easy Salisbury steak the perfect comfort meal served with buttered rolls, macaroni and cheese, and mashed potatoes. Or if you want to serve a healthier version use lean ground beef and serve with a vegetable or salad.
